Tanaya Antony is the creative behind NaysArt, a 21-year-old artist from Narungga mob, proudly born and raised on Kaurna land.
Tanaya’s art is all about expressing themselves and
their culture with bursts of vibrant, bright colours and lively designs. They’ve been painting professionally for about a year now, but have been painting for most of their life, using their art not just as a therapeutic hobby and now a job but as the strongest way for them to stay connected to their roots and culture.
Through NaysArt, Tanaya brings together their heritage and expressive art to create modern pieces that are both vibrant and meaningful. Their work is a celebration of pride and identity, capturing the spirit of land, people and love.
Art has been a lifesaver for Tanaya as they have struggled with identity and other things for most of their lives but, through art, they have been able to connect to the community and find pride and love in themselves and the world around them.
The stobie pole art titled There’s Pride in Everyone (pictured above) is dedicated to everyone in the LGBT community and allies, whether you’re out or not. It’s to express that you are loved, important and seen. The stories illustrate people surrounding a campsite in the LGBT flag colours.”
The second artwork is titled Home away from Home.
“This story is inspired by my mob’s land, Narungga (Yorke Peninsula ways). The emu footprints are to represent the well-known animal of that area and also as one of the totems.”
“The waterways and landmarks are marking the beautiful water and beaches and the country of Narungga, as when I’m home on country my favourite part is the fishing and beaches.”
